Are You a Noblebright or Grimdark Fantasy Reader?

I love fantasy, but it isn’t just one genre. Which I’m sure you’ve noticed!

It’s a spectrum of light and shadow, hope and despair, heroes and survivors. From no magic to amazing powers, and from urban or real-world settings to whole new fantasy kingdoms, fantasy novels span a breadth of characteristics that can leave you wondering where a book will take you.

More than that, some stories leave you believing the world can be better. While others leave you staring into the darkness—and daring it to blink first.

Somewhere along the way, most readers discover they have a preference. While there are many ways to split the fantasy subgenre, today we are going to look at tone.

So the question is…

Are you a noblebright reader… or prefer grimdark?

What Is Noblebright Fantasy?

Noblebright fantasy is built on a simple, powerful idea: Good matters. And it can win.

That doesn’t mean these stories are soft or easy. There are battles, loss, and sacrifice. Truly, these stories can leave you gasping or make you cry. But at their core, noblebright stories believe in:

  • heroism
  • growth
  • loyalty
  • and the idea that people can choose to be better. Even when the odds are impossible.

You’ll often find:

  • Characters who struggle, but still try to do the right thing
  • Friendships that matter as much as the quest
  • A sense that the world is worth saving, even if there are things that need to be changed

And when victory comes? It feels earned.

These books leave you with a touch of warmth and hope at the very least. Sometimes it might be with a wide grin even if you eyes glisten with tears at the cost.

Noblebright Fantasy Examples

These stories lean toward hope, growth, and the belief that choices matter.

The Hobbit

A reluctant hero, loyal friendships, and a journey that proves even the smallest person can change the course of the world.

Mistborn

Even in a broken world ruled by tyranny, this story holds onto the idea that hope—and rebellion—can still rise.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Classic noblebright: sacrifice, redemption, and the triumph of good over darkness.

A Wizard of Earthsea

A quieter, introspective take—where growth, balance, and self-understanding shape the hero’s journey.

The Theft of Swords

Adventure, humor, and deep friendship drive this story, even as the stakes grow larger.

What Is Grimdark Fantasy?

Grimdark walks a very different path. Here, the world is harsher, sharper, and less forgiving.

Power matters. Survival matters. Morality… is negotiable.

In grimdark stories:

  • Heroes are flawed, broken, or barely heroes at all (think anti-hero)
  • Victory often comes with a deep cost
  • And sometimes… there is no victory. Only survival

You’ll often find:

  • Moral gray zones (and then darker gray beneath that)
  • Brutal consequences
  • Characters forced into impossible choices

These stories can be complex, asking tough questions where there is no “right” or “wrong.” Instead, choices are made, consquences are dealt with, and pain in inevitable.

Grimdark Fantasy Examples

These explore the cost of power, moral ambiguity, and survival in harsh worlds.

The Blade Itself

Flawed characters, brutal consequences, and a world where heroism is… complicated.

A Game of Thrones

Power struggles, political intrigue, and the harsh reality that good intentions don’t guarantee survival.

Prince of Thorns

Dark, violent, and unapologetic—following a protagonist who is far from heroic.

The Black Company

A soldier’s-eye view of war, where morality blurs and survival often comes first.

The Poppy War

A devastating exploration of power, trauma, and the cost of wielding magic in a brutal world.

Neither Is Better—But You Might Prefer One

This isn’t about which is better, because both make compelling, interesting stories. Instead, it’s about what kind of emotional journey you want.

Some readers crave:

  • hope
  • meaning
  • the rise of something good

Others are drawn to:

  • realism
  • complexity
  • the raw edge of survival

And many of us drift between the two depending on the day! And that’s okay. What is important is to enjoy the story you are reading.

Where My Stories Fall

If you’ve read my work, you’ve probably noticed something. My stories lean toward noblebright fantasy. Not because the world is easy… but because the characters refuse to let it stay broken.

In Born of Water, Ria doesn’t set out to be a hero. She wants a quiet life. But when everything changes, she doesn’t become perfect or fearless. She chooses to keep going.

To protect. To learn. To stand. Even when the cost is high.

That, to me, is what noblebright is really about. To make the choice to create a better world—not just for yourself but for friends and people you haven’t even met.

It takes a long time for her to flourish, but when Ria finally does, she changes her world.

That theme resides in nearly all of my novels. Born to Darkness is the only one I think that leans toward Grimdark. It was written during a darker time in my life when the complicated morality of the story felt evocative of the troubles of this world.

In general, if you like Noblebright, you would enjoy any of my books! Born to Darkness is the darkest with Arcane Magic, the Tainted Fae, and Friends of my Enemy being dark but still noblebright. On the far end of the spectrum, the World of Myrrah and Mist Runner are strong Noblebright.

So… What Kind of Reader Are You?

Sometimes the easiest way to tell which you prefer is by looking at the stories you already love.

If you find yourself drawn to books like The Hobbit or Mistborn, where hope and growth shine through even the darkest moments… or if you love stories where:

  • the light survives the darkness
  • friendship and loyalty matter
  • and the ending leaves you with hope?

You might be a noblebright reader

If you’re more at home in worlds like A Game of Thrones or The Blade Itself, where survival is never guaranteed and choices come with real consequences… or do you prefer:

  • stories that don’t pull their punches
  • characters who make hard, messy choices
  • and worlds where nothing is guaranteed?

You might be a grimdark reader

Or maybe… You’re a little bit of both?
