An outbreak of a disease affecting cattle mutates when a host carrying a cornavirus capable of widely infecting multiple species begins a worldwide pandemic compounded by slow response times and untracked hosts.
Hurricane Lempert – the Drowning of Miami in 2042
Perception holds that change is slow. Sea levels creep upwards, nibbling at protective dunes and the footings of beachside houses. We will witness climate change unfolding as a slow motion disaster, best seen in reverse and through time lapse. Perceptions are wrong.

When Harvey’s Flu ended in 2039, most countries felt lessons had been learned. If another disease arose and threatened to reach pandemic status, proven precautions were in place to lessen the spread and quickly contain the outbreak. They were ready for another flu. That isn’t what came.

Hurricane Dexter: the Loss of NY and Boston in 2048
Sea level rise began eating the east coast of the United States in the 1990s. By 2025 with the rapid melting of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica, the infrastructure of east coast cities was under threat. Water systems, sewage treatment, streets, and buildings were over a century old. What time, population growth, and natural decay hadn’t stressed to the breaking point, the sea threatened to consume.

The Creation of the Outlands in 2049
The outlands began because the land and weather wouldn’t support people. Drought stripped the moisture from the surface. Wells pumped the aquifers dry. Wind sent clouds of topsoil barreling across the plains. Sometimes you couldn’t tell if the black clouds coming were born of soil or from rampant weather. Both spawned tornadoes. One buried houses, roads, fences, livestock, and fields. The other ripped them apart.

A Military Government for the USA in 2052
Resistance to the military’s involvement in controlling the Outlands, as the semi-abandoned area of the USA’s southwest were dubbed in 2045, was individual and easily swept aside. The encroachment of military control on the weakened governments of remaining cities, those not devastated by hurricanes Lempert or Dexter, began insidiously as help.
